Back in Virginia I am pursuing the continuing struggle for protection for a cultural landscape. I have noticed in all this hypothesis in the terms of preserving history have a high cost which is replete with difficulties. To be sure the historic center of my architectural beginning are rooted in the style of this house . Few will look at this house and know the struggle to stave off European developers or who would wish to transform this placid environment into commerce. Somehow, when that is allowed it will subvert the very reason to have cultural landscapes. History is revealed here in Blandfield, Tappahanock , Virginia (Essex Co.). Because the house is only a small part of the 25,000 acres of my family home and a part of the stables and outbuildings . I could show you , and perhaps will, the Tread that slides away to reveal a hidden storage containers which slaves and valuables were hidden when the Union Army invaded and took all the furnishing s. Also of note is the basement with the inverted arches to withstand the sandy soils of this bluff. Actually the basement was where the cows would enter and a bucked was lowered from the kitchen to produce -viola! fresh milk. Today, technology is need to arrest the absorption of moisture through the masonry walls which causes peeling of paint and mildew build up. It is an indications that our ancestors did not always have moisture under control-today we are better equipped to deal with these problems. The beauty of the house remains. However, unless you visit the' place' inVirginia you will have missed one of the gems of Georgian Architecture. For Architecture is space and one must pass though and experience that space to truly believe in architecture.
